It is unflinching to state that the poems “Tissue” by Imtiaz Dharker and “The Emigree” by Carol Rumens both explore the power inherent in seemingly fragile things but convey different senses. The power of a tissue with clubs together to make an extremely fragile paper is depicted in the poem “Tissue” while, in the poem “The Emigree” the power of memories is expressed. Paper, a group of tissues, has the power to alter things although it is extremely fragile. It has more silence than people and is even used to preserve historical records and ancient anecdotes for years long. A thin sheet of paper if used as a credit card or as a bill which is provided at stores can powerfully change the economical background of a person. If an architect stacks it up to create building it acts as it’s prototype and the power extends when we come to the fact that a grand building is after all group of bricks and bricks in this case is the smallest unit of building a building and hence are considered as tissues. A masterpiece created on a paper can be preserved for years. Group of tissues, papers, are extremely transparent as they speak the truth and potray facts. The power of tissues can be defined in words, it has left the world shaking. Even one of the most complex organisms the humans, are made of tissues and they maintain their transparency in materialistic world as we are able to see one of the thinest tissue, skin.
In the poem”Emigree” the power of memories is shown, it is a bit contrasting from the power of tissue as the power of memories is not to maintain transparency or to make up grand masterpieces or group to make up the humans themselves but to preserve the experienced moments and emotions. Although, the lady speaker has left the joyus country she earlier lived in yet the memories of the happy and bright moments she lived there still exist somewhere in her brain and in her heart. They get crystal clear with time, this also shows the power of a child’s brain to observe things carefully in the surroundings and create unforgettable memories. The memories and the lived moments are so powerful that even if the country whose memories are alive in poet’s heart gets attacked, some war gets thrown over it or something unfortunate happens the memories do not tend to get edited but are preserved they were initially stored. People might clim that the older memories are lies since they haven’t experienced the moments but the person who has that memory can forget “the taste of sunlight”, i.e the good moments those were enjoyed and lively lived and sane happens with the poetess. The best part about memories is that they can take pack the women to the country she eft even without any official document like passport etc. Cherishing a memory is like cherishing oneself. The city might accuse her of her absence but the good memories which were created will live like shadows with will never leave her.
In a nutshell, the purpose of the poems is to state that everything has their own power and significance. Even a fragile tissue of an abstract thing memory carry power and glory and shall never we for granted for anything. Power exists in emotions and deepness of anything and not only the materialistic world. The poems beautifully depict this.
